Method Blog (Final Social Media Project)

Hello everyone!

As finals approach, it's only natural that in my Social Media class, we have a Final Project as well. So, in regards to this, I have been assigned to pick a research project on whatever social media phenomenon that I find interesting and as wanting to look on the more positive powers of media platforms, I chose to focus on the #TrashTag challenge that has swept across the globe and influenced individuals of all ages to clean up trash from public areas and help promote a cleaner, healthier Earth. In my research project, I want to find out why the challenge became so successful and how it encourages people to get active in cleaning up their environments.

Here is my proposed method section:

First, I searched Twitter by searching for both the #TrashTag as well as #TrashChallenge as they both seem to correspond with each other and people freely switch between the two. In regards to when I will search, I can quite literally search any day at any time because it is a relevant enough phenomena that there are active tweets that are sent out every hour and day. I will stop when I decide that I have enough data or when the amount of findings start to become too overwhelming or repetitive. Whenever I searched this, it listed hundreds of results from various countries around the globe from a variety of ages, however, the pictures and posts seem to surround individuals younger in age. I also decided to search Instagram with the same hashtags to see which social platform was more active, but it turns out that both are pretty active in the amount of users that are posting surrounding the social media phenomena. Although there are thousands of posts, I have decided to focus more on the restoration of public parks, beaches, and natural areas that are not considered private areas (like backyards, for instance) simply because this will highlight the actions of the individuals choosing to participate in the #TrashChallenge to show how much of an impact they made.

For this project, I plan on doing research on the individuals/groups who have been posting regarding the challenge and how active their efforts are in consideration to how their actions have impacted their respected environments. I will also analyze the consistency in how often the challenge is accepted and performed by those through social media, as well as how much attention the challenge gets in regards to other social media phenomena and how this particular one is important in consideration to the latest rise of the concern of global warming and pollution.
